Review of T'Bones Unlimited At the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, Adelaide, South Australia 2005-10-25
"Six trombones out front could sound brassy and blaring but Bill Broughton's group, his playing and arrangements, produce a surprisingly mellow sound from such a potentially powerful ensemble.
Of course, when called for, they can put out a commanding sound in brass without an oom-pah-pah to be heard...
...With Bruce Hancock's trio providing the rhtyhm basis...the group sounded at times like a full-on big band, and at other times soft, sweet and creamy-smooth. In the later category was a beautifully shaded solo perfomrance by Broughton of the ballad Body and Soul. Most of the [jazz] trombone solos in group arrangements were taken by Bobby Johnson whose high-energy playing and constant flow of ideas made him a standout, especially in a rendition of There Is No Greater Love.
Clever, and sometimes amusing muscial quotes were exchanged between the trombones and Hancock's piano, while stalwarts John Aue, bass and Laurie Kennedy, drums, kept a solid foundation adding puncuation, emphasis and embroidery."
