New News Update #11 2007-08-01
Wow! Anything in the last 10 months is new news. Time has flown by so quickly and there has been lots of activity at BroughtonMusic.
One of the highlights for this past few months was participating in the Generations In Jazz weekend this past May. It was an incredible experience listening to young people play and perform with their groups.
To me, the overall feeling, other than positive, was one of perspective and growth to each group and musician that attendend, including the directors. You can't help but find out where you are musically but know that you can work harder and get better: and this attitude I think goes through all the divisions that participate. Can you imagine 64 jazz bands and 1700 kids from around this wonderful country...wow!
It's something to look forward to each year, of course, hoping one is invited back! Who wouldn't want to be there. I've been in the music industry for over 40 years now and it was rejuvinating, inspiring and down right fun. Of course, James Morrison and brother John have a tremendous amount to do with that attitude. What a wonderful heritage and experience they are giving our future muso "stars"! Bravo!
There were new pieces to be written. The K&N albums were put on hold for the time being but we have every intention of completing them in the future. A new work for Russell Gray featuring Flugel Horn, Didgeridoo with Brass band and Concert Band accompaniments was completed in June and are probably being performed somewhere in Queensland as we write this update.
Bill also completed a commission for the National Band of New Zealand. A real semi-quaver (16th note for the Americans) romp with each section of the band having a special soli. Even a tuba quartet...lot' of notes...everyone has to play...Bill thinks it should be lots of fun. He's still waiting to hear whether or not he has been cursed by the players or laughed with!
A new piece for the Chicago Staff Band, bandmaster William Himes asking Bill to write a feature piece for trumpeter Chris Jaudes for their 100th anniversary recording.
At present BroughtonMusic is working on two new albums. A Christmas CD that will be all new music. Carols that Bill has written through the years and possibly some from other composer friends. Sharon Raymond will be the featured vocalist. She will bring a beauty and lovely touch to each tune to be recorded. And, secondly, will be the release of "Happy Songs, Happy Kids!" within the next few months. These are songs Bill has written and produced through the years and they all have a positive, uplifting, happy theme. Styles will range from country, bluegrass, rock, jazz, ballads and should be enjoyed by kids of all ages!
We have not been as good at keeping up these news updates as we would have liked to, however, at the other end, we're happy to be busy doing what we enjoy best...music all the time!
